A day in the life of a wedding dog chaperone: Behind the scenes with Show Fur Around

For many couples, their dog is an integral part of their family. Including them in the wedding day creates unforgettable memories, but it also comes with plenty of logistics.

From transporting dogs safely to the venue and keeping them calm during the ceremony to helping photographers capture the perfect shot, a professional wedding dog chaperone plays an invaluable role behind the scenes.

We asked the team at ShowFur Around to discover what it's really like to spend your weekends helping four-legged VIPs take centre stage on one of the happiest days of their owners' lives, and why this unique role is about so much more than simply holding a lead.

1. What does a wedding dog chaperone actually do on the wedding day?

We start with collecting the dog/s from the pick-up location (can be home, airbnb, boarding facility, friends or family) and then head to the wedding.

We like to arrive with plenty of time so the dog/s can familiarise themselves and be as comfortable as possible (walk around, toilet stops), if required we can dress the dog/s in wedding attire too!

Typically, we facilitate the meet and greet of guests with the dog/s, can be present for the ceremony itself if needed and we work with the wedding photographer for the all-important photography with friends and family.

We then do the rounds and say goodbye to guests and load the dog/s for their journey home and if required, can feed and put them to bed.

2. What information do you need from a couple before the wedding day?

How many dogs, name, breed and general temperament / behaviour. Ultimately we want the dog to be as comfortable as possible to enjoy the day, along with guests to ensure fun for everyone.

We need to know the pick-up location for the dog/s and if anyone will be home (generally we can facilitate the pick-up without anyone present if needed), the wedding / reception location and drop-off details.

3. What are the most common mistakes couples make when including their dog?

Generally speaking, weddings are quite thoroughly planned of course so we rarely encounter 'mistakes' as such. The main concern is how the dog/s are around large groups of people, noise & strangers. Are the dogs quite social and happy in these settings, are they nervous and anxious?

4. What does a typical wedding day timeline look like from your perspective?

We plan how long it will take to get to the pick-up location (factoring in if we need to 'dress' the dog for the occasion, access to and from the property, etc) and allowing plenty of time for the journey.

If necessary for longer trips, we stop for a toilet break or short walk to ensure the dog/s are as comfortable as possible.

Upon arrival, I familiarise myself with the venue, guests and reception manager / planner. Effectively, I then manage my time according to the schedule and any requests from the wedding party, right through to the conclusion of the booking.

From initial pick-up to drop-off, typically our wedding day services are between 1-3 hours in length but we cater for just about any request.

5. How do you handle unexpected issues on the day (nerves, barking, toileting, weather)?

We allow plenty of time for the dog/s to not only get familiar and comfortable with us, but also at the wedding venue. The less stressed and anxious the dog/s are the better so we ensure they are as comfortable and happy as possible on the day.

We have treats and toys and allow ample time for toileting and walks. The vans are all fully air-conditioned with comfortable bedding, if we find the dogs need 'time out' we happily accompany them back to the van for a break, but this is very rare.

6. Do you stay with the dog for the whole wedding, or just certain parts?

Weddings can last anywhere from as little as 30 minutes to 3 hours and beyond. We stay with the dog/s for as long as we are needed on the day, or if needed, just for the formalities or photography, it is completely up to the wedding party.

We can provide one-way transport (the dog/s are already at the wedding, we just take them home) or a return journey.

7. What should couples provide for their dog on the wedding day?

Some couples request to have a 'dog-tux' or tiara for their dog/s which we can facilitate on the day. If the dog/s prefer a certain treat or toy then we bring those along too, along with the appropriate lead and collar supplied by the couple.

8. Are there situations where you recommend not bringing a dog to the wedding?

There hasn't been a wedding or venue yet where we have encountered a situation where the dog is not suitable. If the dog is very sensitive to loud noises or anxious around large groups, perhaps it might not be a suitable occasion, however we recommend talking with us to discuss any concerns at the earliest opportunity.

9. What’s the most memorable (or unusual) wedding you’ve worked at with a dog?

They are all very memorable and special to us! However, one wedding that I will never forget is a time where due to the age and health of the dog, the wedding couple did not think he would make it to the wedding (booked well in advance, and how the dog would go on the day).

Not only did he make it to the big day, it was a surprise booking as the bride was not told her dog was coming, there were tears of joy when the bride arrived to see her dog dressed in a tux waiting for her!

10. What is one piece of advice you would give couples considering including their dog?

Do it!! It is such a special day and dogs are very much part of our family, the memories will last forever!

A wedding day is full of once-in-a-lifetime moments, and for dog-loving couples, having their best furry friend by their side makes those memories even more special.

As our interview with ShowFur Around shows, a professional dog chaperone provides far more than pet sitting – they offer expert handling, thoughtful planning and complete peace of mind, allowing couples to relax and enjoy every moment knowing their dog is safe, comfortable and included.

We'd like to thank David from ShowFur Around for sharing an insight into this rewarding profession and for helping so many couples celebrate their wedding day with every member of the family by their side.
