Dressing your dog for your wedding
Wedding outfit inspiration and accessories
If your dog is going to be part of your wedding day, it's only natural to want them to look the part too. From a simple bow tie or floral collar to a tiny tuxedo or custom-made dress, there are plenty of ways to give your dog a special wedding-day look.
But dressing your dog isn't just about creating an adorable photograph. Whatever you choose should be comfortable, secure and appropriate for your dog's size, breed, personality and the weather.
The best wedding outfit for your dog is one they barely notice they're wearing.
Simple wedding accessories for dogs
You don't need a complicated outfit to make your dog look like part of the wedding party. Sometimes a small accessory can be all that's needed.
Bow ties
A bow tie is one of the easiest ways to give your dog a wedding-day look.
Bow ties can attach to an existing collar, which means your dog doesn't have to wear an unfamiliar piece of clothing. You can choose a colour that matches your wedding theme or coordinate it with the groom's or wedding party's outfits.
For dogs who don't enjoy wearing clothing, a simple bow tie can be a much better option than a full outfit.
Floral collars
Flowers can be a beautiful way to incorporate your wedding colours into your dog's outfit.
A floral collar or small floral arrangement attached to a harness can complement your bridal bouquet and other wedding flowers.
If you're using fresh flowers, always check that the varieties are safe around dogs. Some flowers and plants can be toxic if chewed or swallowed. Your florist should be able to help you choose suitable options.
Make sure flowers aren't positioned where your dog can easily chew them, and avoid anything with sharp stems, wires or other materials that could cause injury.
Wedding bandanas
A personalised bandana can be a fun and practical alternative to a more formal outfit.
You could choose a simple white or neutral design, match it to your wedding colours or have your dog's name printed on it.
Bandanas are particularly useful for dogs who aren't comfortable wearing clothing but are perfectly happy wearing something around their neck.
Personalised collars
A new collar can give your dog a subtle wedding-day makeover without requiring them to wear a full outfit.
Some couples choose personalised collars featuring their dog's name, while others select a collar that complements their wedding colours.
If you're buying a new collar specifically for the wedding, make sure your dog wears it several times beforehand. The wedding day isn't the time to discover that the collar rubs, slips or irritates them.
Formal outfits for dogs
If your dog is going to have a starring role in your wedding, you might want to take their outfit a little further.
Dog tuxedos and suits
A tiny tuxedo or suit can look fantastic for a formal wedding, particularly if your dog is going to be part of the wedding party.
There are plenty of options, from simple waistcoat-style outfits to more elaborate tuxedos complete with bow ties.
Look for lightweight, breathable materials and make sure the outfit allows your dog to move, sit, walk and toilet normally.
Dog dresses
For a more traditional wedding look, there are dresses designed specifically for dogs.
You might choose a simple white or ivory dress, a floral design or something that complements the bride's dress or bridesmaids' outfits.
However, don't feel that your dog's outfit needs to match yours exactly. A simple accessory can often create a more natural and comfortable look.
Custom-made wedding outfits
If you're looking for something particularly special, you can have an outfit made specifically for your dog.
Custom clothing can be useful for dogs with unusual proportions or particular comfort requirements, as the outfit can be designed around their measurements.
If you're ordering something custom-made, give yourself plenty of time for fittings and adjustments. Your dog should have the opportunity to wear the finished outfit before the wedding day so you know they're comfortable in it.

Dressing your dog for the weather
The weather should always be one of the biggest considerations when choosing your dog's wedding outfit.
A heavy formal outfit might look adorable in photographs but could become uncomfortable very quickly on a warm day.
This is particularly important for outdoor weddings and summer celebrations. Thick fabrics, multiple layers and synthetic materials can cause your dog to overheat.
For warmer weather, consider keeping your dog's outfit extremely simple – perhaps a bow tie, lightweight bandana or floral collar.
For cooler weddings, a lightweight jacket or personalised coat might provide some extra warmth while still looking appropriate for the occasion.
And remember that your dog may be wearing their outfit for much longer than you realise. Consider the entire day rather than just the few minutes when they'll be photographed.
Comfort should always come first
Your dog doesn't know that it's your wedding day – and they certainly don't understand why they're suddenly expected to wear a tiny suit!
If your dog shows signs that they're uncomfortable, it's better to remove the outfit than insist they keep wearing it for the sake of photographs.
Watch for things such as:
- Excessive scratching
- Trying to remove the clothing
- Repeated shaking
- Stiff or unusual movements
- Excessive panting
- Hiding or trying to escape
- Reluctance to walk or sit
- Signs of anxiety or distress
Some dogs love dressing up, while others absolutely hate it. Let your dog's reaction guide you.
Practise before your wedding day
If your dog is going to wear something new, don't wait until the morning of the wedding to put it on them.
Introduce the outfit gradually in the weeks before the wedding. Let your dog sniff it first, then try it on for a short period while giving them plenty of positive reinforcement.
Gradually increase the amount of time they wear it.
It's also worth practising normal activities while they're dressed:-
- Can they walk comfortably?
- Can they sit and lie down?
- Can they go to the toilet?
- Can they comfortably wear their harness and lead with the outfit underneath or over the top?
If the answer to any of these is no, the outfit needs adjusting or replacing.
Choosing the right harness and lead
Your dog's wedding accessories should still be practical.
If your dog will be walking down the aisle or moving around the venue, you'll need a secure harness or collar and lead that you're confident using.
A decorative lead can look lovely in photographs, but safety should always come first. If you're using a different lead or harness for the wedding, practise with it beforehand.
You may also want to have your dog's usual lead and harness available as a backup.
This is particularly important at unfamiliar venues, where there may be open gates, roads, other dogs, unfamiliar people and plenty of distractions.
Don't forget identification
A wedding can be an exciting and unfamiliar environment for your dog, so it's worth making sure their identification details are up to date.
Check that your dog's microchip information is current and that they are wearing appropriate identification.
If your dog is wearing a decorative collar for the ceremony, make sure it is still secure and suitable for attaching their lead if necessary.
A beautiful wedding outfit isn't much use if it compromises your dog's safety.
Matching your dog's outfit to your wedding
If you want your dog to look like part of the wedding party, there are plenty of subtle ways to coordinate their outfit.
You could match their:
- Bow tie to the groom's suit
- Bandana to the bridesmaids' dresses
- Floral collar to your bouquet
- Collar to your wedding colour palette
- Outfit accessories to your wedding flowers
- Personalised details to your wedding stationery
You don't have to match everything exactly. Choosing one or two complementary colours can be enough to make your dog's outfit feel connected to the overall wedding styling.
Think about the photographs
Your dog's outfit will probably feature in plenty of your wedding photographs, so think about how it will look from different angles.
If you're planning photographs with your dog, tell your dog-friendly wedding photographer about the outfit you've chosen.
They may be able to suggest locations or poses where the outfit and accessories can be seen naturally.
It's also worth taking a few photographs before the wedding day to make sure everything sits correctly. A bow tie that looked perfect when your dog was standing still might end up sideways after five minutes of walking!
Pack a wedding-day dog kit
It's a good idea to bring a wedding day essentials bag containing everything your dog might need during the day.
Consider packing:
- Your dog's usual collar and lead
- A spare lead
- Water and a travel bowl
- Treats
- Their favourite toy or comfort item
- Poo bags
- A towel
- Any required medication
- A spare outfit or accessory
- A brush
- Wet-weather gear if appropriate
Having a backup outfit or collar is particularly useful if your dog gets wet, muddy or enthusiastic about exploring the venue!
Your dog doesn't need a full wedding outfit
One of the biggest mistakes couples can make is assuming their dog needs to be dressed from head to toe to look special.
They don't.
Your dog might look perfect with nothing more than a beautiful collar, a little bow tie or a simple floral accessory.
In fact, keeping things simple can often make your photographs look more natural and allows your dog's personality to shine through.
The most important thing is that your dog feels comfortable and happy.
Let your dog's personality guide the look
Think about the type of dog you have rather than the outfit you saw online.
If your dog loves attention and happily wears clothing, they might enjoy a formal wedding outfit.
If they're easily irritated by clothing, a simple collar accessory could be a much better choice.
And if they really don't like dressing up at all, there's absolutely nothing wrong with leaving them in their normal collar and letting their personality be the star of the day.
Your dog is already an important part of your family. They don't need a fancy outfit to prove it.
