Dea from Little Black Bow Photography believes the best wedding photos come from genuine moments, real connections and plenty of laughter.
Based in Newcastle and photographing weddings throughout the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens, Sydney and beyond, Dea has built a reputation for creating a relaxed atmosphere that allows couples to simply be themselves.
With a passion for authentic storytelling and capturing the emotions that make every celebration unique, she's the perfect photographer for couples who want their wedding day – and their beloved dogs – documented naturally and beautifully.

1. How did you first start photographing dogs at weddings?
As a wedding photographer I quickly noticed that dogs are often as important to a couple as any family member. More and more couples were wanting to include their dog in their ceremony or have them there for a 'family photo' after the ceremony so I always encourage this.
2. What makes photographing a dog at a wedding different from photographing human guests?
The unpredictability! Dogs don't care about timelines, guest etiquette or where the camera is. This often leads to the most unexpected and genuine moments.
3. What’s the most common mistake couples make when including their dog in wedding photos?
Expecting perfection. Some couples worry that their dog won't sit still or look at the camera but these candid moments are often the most meaningful.
4. Do you have any tips for helping dogs feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera?
Bring treats and their favourite toy. Also have someone close by that they are comfortable with, especially for the more anxious dogs.
5. How do you prepare for a wedding where a dog will be involved?
I always ask the couple how they think their dog will be on the day, if they will be anxious around a big group of people and if they have a handler there for them so the couple can relax.

"I love to keep it natural by including them in candid cuddles, interacting with their dog/s in a genuine way and the couple walking with their dog. "

6. What are some of your favourite ways to include dogs in wedding portraits?
I love to keep it natural by including them in candid cuddles, interacting with their dog/s in a genuine way and the couple walking with their dog.
7. Have you ever had a dog completely steal the show during a wedding shoot? What happened?
At one wedding it started to rain during the ceremony so everyone started to put up their umbrellas. The couples' dalmation wasn't fond of the umbrellas and started to bark at everyone who put one up, whilst the couple were saying their vows!
8. What advice would you give couples whose dog is energetic, shy or not well-trained?
Work with your dogs personality rather than against it. If they are energetic, possibly have someone take them for a walk before the wedding. We can also incorporate their playful, energetic (unpredictable!), side into the photos.
If they are shy we can try and keep things calm and do photos with them first and then have a minder to take them off site after they have been done.
9. Do you recommend hiring a professional dog chaperone for the wedding day?
Yes! A professional dog chaperone is one of the best investments if you want to have your fur babies be part of your day. They can transport them, supervise them, help with photos and make sure they feel comfortable. This takes the stress off you and the guests.
10. If a couple is dreaming of beautiful wedding photos with their dog, what are the three most important things they should do before the big day?
- Arrange a dedicated handler or hire a professional dog chaperone.
- Decide exactly when and where your dog will need to be involved and communicate this with the handler and venue staff.
- Relax and enjoy the moments with your dog/s without having a perfect expectation of how the photo with them will turn out.
