Dog wedding photography inspiration and ideas

Capture the special moments with your dog

Your wedding day will go by in a whirlwind of excitement, happy tears, celebrations and cuddles – and having your dog there can create some of the most memorable photographs of the day.

Whether your dog is officially part of the wedding party or simply joining you for some photos, there are so many beautiful ways to capture the connection between you. From relaxed portraits and playful moments to dramatic wedding-day photographs, your dog can add plenty of personality and emotion to your wedding album.

This gallery is packed with dog wedding photography ideas to inspire your own photographs and help you think about the moments you'd love your photographer to capture.

Beautiful wedding photos with your dog

Some of the best photographs aren't necessarily the ones where everyone is looking directly at the camera. Your dog's personality can make the photographs feel natural, fun and completely unique to you.

Consider capturing a mixture of posed and candid photographs throughout the day. You might have a few planned portraits with your dog, followed by photographs of the three of you simply interacting, walking or enjoying a quiet moment together.

Couple portraits with your dog

A classic photograph of the newlyweds with their dog is one you'll treasure for years to come. You could sit together, kneel beside your dog, have them between you or simply stand together while your dog looks up at you.

Don't worry if your dog won't sit perfectly still. Some of the most memorable photographs happen when they're looking away, giving you a kiss or doing something completely unexpected.

Candid moments

Ask your photographer to keep an eye out for the unplanned moments too. A cuddle between you and your dog, a happy greeting, a curious look or your dog following you around the venue can all make wonderful photographs.

Candid photographs often capture your dog's personality better than a perfectly posed shot.

Outdoor wedding photographs

Outdoor locations provide plenty of opportunities for relaxed photographs with your dog. Gardens, paddocks, forests, beaches and open spaces can all create beautiful backdrops.

You could take a walk together, explore the grounds of your venue or simply let your dog enjoy some time outside while your photographer captures the interaction naturally.

Wedding party photographs

Your dog doesn't have to appear only in photographs with the bride and groom. Include them in some of your wedding party photographs too.

Your bridesmaids, groomsmen and other members of the wedding party can all get involved. Whether your dog is sitting with the group, being cuddled by a bridesmaid or joining the groomsmen for a relaxed photograph, these images can add plenty of personality to your wedding album.

Getting-ready photographs

Some of the sweetest photographs can happen before the ceremony even begins.

If your dog is with you while you're getting ready, ask your photographer to capture these quieter moments. Your dog might be sitting beside you while you have your hair and makeup done, meeting you in your wedding dress for the first time or simply keeping you company during the excitement of the morning.

These photographs can tell the story of the day from the very beginning.

Walking photographs

Walking photographs can be particularly beautiful because they feel natural rather than staged. Take your dog for a stroll around the venue with your photographer following along.

You could walk hand-in-hand with your partner while your dog walks beside you, or have one of you hold the lead while the other walks alongside.

For an outdoor or beach wedding, these photographs can also make the most of the surrounding scenery.

Don't forget the little details

Your dog's photographs don't all need to show their whole body. Ask your photographer to capture some of the smaller details too.

A close-up of your dog's face, their paws beside your shoes, a nose resting against your hand or a quiet cuddle can create beautiful intimate photographs.

You could also capture details that connect your dog to the wedding, such as their lead, collar, flowers, wedding-day accessory or a personalised sign.

Let your dog's personality shine

Every dog is different, and that's something worth embracing in your wedding photographs.

If your dog is energetic and playful, don't worry about trying to make them sit perfectly for every photograph. Let them run, explore and interact with you.

If they're more relaxed, use that to your advantage with quiet portraits and cuddly photographs.

Some dogs love attention and others are happier staying close to their owners. Your photographer can work with your dog's personality rather than expecting them to behave like a human member of the wedding party.

The goal isn't to create perfectly posed photographs. It's to capture your relationship with your dog and the happiness of having them there.

Think beyond the traditional wedding portrait

Your dog's presence can create opportunities for photographs that you may not otherwise have considered.

You might capture:

  • Your dog waiting outside the ceremony
  • A quiet moment between your dog and the bride or groom
  • Your dog exploring the wedding venue
  • A walk together after the ceremony
  • Your dog meeting guests
  • Your wedding party interacting with your dog
  • Your dog relaxing during the reception
  • A sunset or golden hour portrait with your dog
  • Your dog looking back at you while walking
  • A fun or unexpected moment that happens naturally

Sometimes these unexpected photographs become the ones you love the most.

Plan some special photo time

With everything happening on your wedding day, it can be easy to run out of time for photographs with your dog. Talk to your photographer before the wedding about how and when you'd like your dog included.

You don't need to spend hours taking photographs. Even 15–20 minutes set aside specifically for photographs with your dog can give you a wonderful collection of images.

Consider taking your dog for photographs shortly after the ceremony, when the formalities are over and you have a little more time to relax together. Alternatively, golden hour can provide a beautiful opportunity for romantic photographs with your dog as the light becomes softer.

If your dog is only attending for part of the day, plan your photography around the time they'll be there.

Be ready for the unexpected

Dogs don't always follow the shot list – and that's part of the fun!

Your dog might refuse to sit, wander off, lick your face or decide that your wedding dress is the perfect place for a cuddle. Rather than worrying about everything going exactly to plan, give your photographer the freedom to capture those moments too.

Some of the funniest and most genuine wedding photographs happen when nobody is quite sure what the dog is going to do next.
